Culture and the Bridges of Bennington County
FRI OCTOBER 12
Again it is raining and overcast this morning, but despite this the autumn colours are still very pretty and we decide to do some more cultural things in an effort to ignore the drizzle. Park-McCullough House was left to the state by it's final family owners, who basically departed the house leaving everything behind - luggage, clothes, toys, books, paintings, toiletries (I'm not kidding, a half empty bottle of Listerine was sitting on the bathroom shelf) and furniture - so the house was extremely impressive and a wonderful view into the lives of the family that entertained Presidents and Governors there during the house's lifetime as a family residence.
That afternoon we tour the Bridges of Bennington County - basically 5 covered bridges dotted around the area. Although I didn't catch a glimpse of Clint Eastwood or Meryl Streep at any of the bridges :), they were quaint and obviously a big attraction as I wasn't the only tourist or 'Leaf Peeper' snapping away.
On our way home we stopped by the Robert Frost homestead for a photo opportunity and a chance to quote some of 'Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening':
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.'
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep'
So much for culture :)
